Intestinal obstruction or Intestinal twist in Equines

Causes:

Causes and Treatment of Intestinal obstruction or Intestinal twist in Equines

1-Severe colic that causes the horse to move violently, flip over, and roll on its back on the ground.
2-Presence of a large number of worms in the small intestine leading to blockage.
3-Administration of a large amount of carbacol injection, which increases intestinal movement and causes it to twist around itself or burst.
4-Eating foreign bodies such as sand or hair, which can harden and block the small intestine.

Symptoms:

-Sudden colic symptoms or symptoms of bloating or intestinal obstruction.
-Severe sweating due to fatigue and pain.
-Increased heart rate to about 100-120 beats per minute (normal is 40 beats per minute).
-Absence of bowel movements and no remaining fecal matter during rectal examination.
-Rapid discharge during rectal injection without any change in quantity or color.
-Abdominal pain upon external examination.

Treatment:

Usually there is no treatment and the animal dies within 48 hours in case of complete blockage.
If the blockage is not complete, it may continue for up to 7-10 days.
Surgical intervention is an option, but this technique has not yet been proven successful because it requires high facilities and equipment, as the slightest contamination can cause the death of the animal.
The development in this case has not progressed much.
